2021 Roxboro Sharks / first meet is on Tuesday May 25
A note from Head Coach Jesse Lewis-
Roxboro Parents,
First off, thank you all for welcoming me to the Roxboro Sharks. Special thanks to Jennifer Entrekin for all of the work she does for this team. This is a great summer to be back in the water.
Please take a moment to review the swim meet schedule on our website. I ask that you indicate whether or not your athlete(s) are attending each meet. Any athlete left "undeclared" will not be able to participate in that meet. Signups close on the website 4 days before each competition.
As a reminder, this first meet versus Huntley Hills is virtual. Since it is just us at Roxboro, this is a great meet for first-timers or anyone nervous about competing again. Signups for this meet close on Friday night.
Let us know if you have any questions.
Jesse Lewis
Hello Sharks!
I can hardly believe it, but we are less than a week away from our first swim meet of the season! Tuesday May 25, 2021. This email is full of information. I am asking you please to read it in entirely.
The swim meet on Tuesday May 25, 2021 is what we call a “virtual meet” or “in-house meet”. Per the league, we are matched up to our competitor, Huntley Hills. We swim our meet at our pool while they are swimming the same meet at their pool. This is new to a lot of our older Sharks and really new to our new Sharks. We will swim every single event. Each swimmer will have a finish time. At the completion of the meet, we merge our files with Huntley Hills, the place finishes are determined, final score calculated, and the winner declared. Because this is a virtual/in-house meet, Head Coach Jesse has decided to waive the rule that states every swimmer must be able to swim a full lap without any aide. We will have our coaches in the water to assist those swimmers complete their event. Please note, this option will not be available at future meets. So, any registered Shark that wants to swim, is welcome to sign up for the meet.
We utilize SwimTopia to collect the information for those swimmers that want to swim the meet. Meet entry deadline for our first meet is this Friday May 21 at midnight. It is easy. You login, go to meets, select attending or not attending for each of your swimmers. You can leave comments for Coach Jesse. It is not a family RSVP, it is by swimmer, so please be sure to select attending or not attending per every swimmer in your family.
WE NEED YOU! Roxboro is a great community. We are lucky to have a Board that fully supports our swim team. We have a great facility and fantastic lifeguards. We have a staff of 12 coaches that love this sport, this team and their jobs. I simply ask that if your swimmer is swimming the meet, please volunteer for a job to help our meet go safely and smoothly. There is no volunteer job that will prevent you from seeing your swimmer swim his/her events. Katy Barnes and Alison Strok are our Volunteer Coordinators and they are excited to help you with your volunteer roles and help you figure out how to make sure you get to see your swimmer in the water for his/her events. The jobs tab is right next to the meet entry tab. Again, if your swimmer is in the meet, we need you to volunteer.
We have some very specific roles that need to be filled that require a little bit more commitment to time and training. We are in need of two adults to serve as our HyTek computer operators for the season. For home swim meets, you get reserved parking and a front row seat to the meet. Often I can get you reserved parking at our away meets as well. Training is free and can be done at your home on your time. Head Coach Jesse is fully trained in HyTek and can help with any pre-meet questions, but his primary and only responsibility at meets is to be the Head Coach. Please consider signing up for this very important role. If you are interested, please reach out directly to me at [email protected]
Once again, Tom and Bev Maiellaro have stepped up to lead our swim meet concession stand. They have the best “Shark” meal in town. A freshly grilled burger and/or a hotdog, chips and a drink. Plus a huge variety of candy treats to tempt every swimmer and parent. This year we will accept cash or ccard (via Square) for payments. I am thrilled to share that for our May 25 meet, dinner and treats are ON THE HOUSE! That’s right, sign up to swim and volunteer this meet and dinner is on us.
A general time line for a home meet.
4pm, Sharks report on deck
4:30pm, Sharks warm up in the pool
5:30pm, MEET STARTS
7:00pm, usually the first half of the meet is complete and 6U’s are finished with their events
9:00pm, the meet ends
I will continue to send out more information about our meets. So please, log in and sign up your swimmer and volunteer for a job.
GO Sharks!
